Over the past few decades, Bremerton has seen some drastic changes to its landscape. Many dilapidated blocks have been replaced by new apartments, and older buildings have been restored. This kind of rejuvenation is great for the community, but it often displaces rodents and insects, causing them to infest nearby buildings and properties.
Bremerton’s bed bug population is nearing epidemic levels. Puget Sound Naval Shipyard and the Bremerton Annex of Naval Base Kitsap are extremely beneficial for the region for countless reasons, but their presence contributes heavily to the spread of bed bugs. The frequent world travel that many of the Navy’s sailors and private contractors embark on can spread bed bugs like wildfire.
The Navy’s presence, coupled with Bremerton’s International Airport, creates a high level of travel in the area; bed bugs are hitchhikers by nature, and use travelers as a means of spreading from one place to another.
